A couple of tunes played on Simply Folk

On Sunday, Oct. 18th, two songs from the Small Town Charm project were aired on Wisconsin's foremost radio program featuring folk musicians and their work. Hosted by the iconic Tom Martin-Erickson, it has been the benchmark for musical variety and regional and national caliber singer songwriters and acoustic players. Small Town Charm and Fields of Peace were played; thanks to those who listen and requested the songs. I am humbled and honored to be included in the playlist. Thanks again!!

2nd CD, Small Town Charm finished!

The long awaited Small Town Charm CD project is nearing the end of the post production phase and will be ready for purchase on August 16th. The project was recorded at two different studios with the bulk of it recorded at Limelight Studio in beautiful Bohners Lake, Wisconsin, under the watchful eyes and ears of Joey Halbur, studio owner/engineer. The new project departs from "Live like and Artist" in instrumentation and production methods. STC has more of a layered approach without compromising the integrity of the song or performance. It has 70 minutes and 14 original songs inspired by some of the people, places and things I have encountered in the last couple of years. It features back up vocals by Jenny Hensgen and Anne Phillips with help from Shane Murphy on the title track. Other players include Ron Weiler on Bass, Tim Hummell on drums, Brian "Looper" Lucas on harp, Rick Lewis on dobro and lap steel, Carlo Cotrone on the keyboard, Jeffrey Santaga on clarinet and sax, Elias Goldstein on the viola and fiddle and myself on guitar and mandolin. The disc also includes a collaboration with choral music director, Derek Machan and the 2008 Waterford Union Vocal Jazz Group on the song "Fields of Peace", a song inspired by a visit to the Peace Garden on the Canada/USA border. The project was mastered by 3 time Grammy winner, Elliott Federman in his Long Island, New York studio. Elliott provided some fresh ears and a level of professionalism to make the project competitive and and certainly something I am proud to be a part of. Again the asthetically pleasing graphic work was provided by Jay Harris of Hacjob design. It has been a detail driven journey that tested my patience but again opened my eyes to the wonderfully unexpected joys that come with the creative process. The open exchange of ideas was encouraged and fostered in the "mojo" room. Certainly one of the small town charms I have come to know are the gifted musicians that live in my small town. I hope you enjoy what we have put together!

Greetings and salutations!
Great spirits around us these days and almost, almost makes a person want to write a nasty little tune about my old friend Brett Favre....but i might change my mind about that.

I've been spending time with family and friends and working on "learning" my new material for the CD project...final selections are getting close and the process is a lengthy one. Have added a female voice and a good one at that. Stay tuned for introductions in the near future. Be well!

Wedding project

There comes a time when the father of the bride has to give the girl away...and it happened in our family this fall. Kelley has met the man of her dreams and found her happiness, teaching music in the Madison area. Her man Dan is a wonderful addition to our family and brings his own "musicality", complete with a booming bass and vocal percussion for those long car rides. We are fast friends with his family and sincerely look forwrd to our times together. In fact, Dan's mom helped co-write and sing backup on a new song that will become part of the next Terry Murphy music project. I released a limited mini CD of songs especially written for Dan and Kelley's wedding. Good tidings on your journey....that is not only a wedding wish but the title of a new song.

Summer is ending..a few thoughts on my travels

The summer monthes have gone by and I have traveled plenty in search of interesting people places and garage sales. My travels have brought me from the Carribean warmth of Anquilla to the vast wheat fields of Manitoba. I have enjoyed meeting new people and continue to be inspired by the overwhelming goodness of people we never seem to read or hear about in the commercial news reports. Believe me when I tell you there are many good things happening in the world...we just need to to trust that the world is simply not as bad as some my lead us to believe. While I intended to begin a new recording project, the whirlwind of traveling around didn't bode well with coordinating schedules. I am eager to begin and promise a slightly different sound but still the fundamental simplicity associated with variations of folk music. Stay tuned to our calendar for upcoming concerts and unti we meet again ...happy trails!
